Debbie Rubenstein, Community Engagement
Debbie has spent her professional life researching policy and organizing citizens to engage with issues. She began as part of Bill Moyers documentary team and spent 12 years creating coalitions, books and websites that supported and spread the ideas found in those documentaries. Since moving to Charlotte, she has become a passionate supporter of public education, helping to create four organizations. The first, MeckFuture, organized citizen support for increasing county funding of public schools. That funding helped prevent some of the most threatening cuts to the CMS school district. She went on to be part of Public School Friends, and Together4Meck which lobbied for increased teacher pay and a sales tax in support of increase pay for all CMS staffers. The fourth organization was a Gathering of Minds which convened business leaders, teachers, students, parents and political leaders for conversations about the underlying ideals of education: wonder, persistence, grift and more. Debbie is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and, along with her husband, David Flynn, the parent of two CMS students.
